Pablos is a hacker and a futurologist. He work at . He wears a black shirt, has medium long hair and talks quick and entertaining. He starts of with pointing out where some real innovation gaps are. He tried on almost all head mounted displays and they generally suck. Hackers are the frontrunners of innovation, always looking for new ways to hack the world. The world is their playground and they show how vulnerable we’re actually are. Pablo gives some very entertaining examples.
1. Hotel room hacking
Try to find an hotel room without a television these days. It’s difficult. With some simple gear you can use the network for the hotel to get the premium content for free. The hacker can even take over your television in another room. If the TV’s got internet connectivity, he can watch you surf. If the tv is hooked up to a billing system (where you can see the costs made on your account), he can see it and change it. So you better not stay in a hotel in a city where a hacker’s conference is held.
2. Car hacking
Most cars these days have a computer as a brain with a sophisticated operating system. But unlike a personal computer operating systems, the brains from the cars aren’t updated that often, if any time at all. So it bring the world of hacking to the car. You can break the code for car keys so you can open other cars. You can find the system key code so you can open any car.
3. Wireless networks
Wireless networks are vulnerable by default. You can pick the flow of bytes out of the air and gather all kinds of information out of it. Pablos has followed someone’s whereabouts at a congres by tracking his bluetooth profile. They developed a rolling robot with a screen which finds wireless networks, hacks them and shows you the passwords on the screen.
4. Voice-over IP hacking
More and more people are using Skype or Voice-over IP communication. It is very easy to spoof the identity of the caller. Pablos phones the VOIP number of Cory Doctorrow and changes his welcome message. Which isn’t that bad, because the message from Cory was too long anyway
5. Social network hacking
Pablos ends with a great example of hacking of social networks. Sammy is guy who was actually quite good at programming, but unfortunately without any attention of the female half of the world. He saw at Myspace that the guys with the most friends also attracted the nicest looking girls. He put up a piece of code on his page: If you would visit his page, you would automattically add Sammy as your friend. If anyone visited your profile afterwards, he or she would also add your Sammy as his/her friend. The best thing was that in your profile a line would be put: Sammy is my hero. Pablos did the same at the Picnic Network site so that some speaker profiles now show the line Pablos is my hero.
